Bizen Shishi Late Edo Period Bizen Tokkuri

Many applied figures can be found on Bizen tokkuri and many are called ningyo-dokkuri--ningyo meaning doll or figure--and we find images of 'lucky gods' or other auspicious images. Most are on the large size and often square of round. It is very rare to find one as offered here in terms of form and the applied shishi on each side. The shishi has very fine detail and is very well positioned inside his/her universal enso circle. Late Edo Bizen has the sheen of bronze or copper as the old kilns were not used and a new Tempo kiln was introduced. The tokkuri has a flower petal motif around the neck and stands on four applied button-like feet. It is a museum piece and also fine to use for enjoying sake. In perfect condition with a signed box by the Japanese ceramic art author/scholar Idegawa Naoki, who just published a new 420-page book about 'The real thing and fakes.' This tokkuri was also featured in Yellin's Honoho Geijutsu shuki column in issue 58,1999. It's 15.0cm.tallx 13.0cm.across and 4.5cm.deep.
