Here is as good as it gets for a Shino tokkuri, or Shino for that matter: warm creamy feldspar glaze, soft hi-iro fire tones, iron-underglaze enso design, great clay and engaging form. Made by the very talented--and humble--Mino potter Hori Ichiro, the tokkuri dates back to about 1997 and is 15.5cm.tall and 9cm.across, signed on side, signed box and is in perfect condition. I enjoy having a work with an enso--'zen circle' around as it reminds me of the cycles we encounter in life; leaving and coming each day, the seasons, earth, 'life-death,' a breath. Even going deeper from the book "Zen Words/Zen Calligraphy" by Eido T.Shimano and published by Tankosha, "When the Zen masters are asked to express something which is inexpressible, they often draw a circle, not necessarily a perfect, round circle as one made with a compass--as a matter of fact, quite often circles that are imperfect. Sometimes a short saying is added like, "Have a cup of tea with a round cake" or "No birth, no death." Whichever the case, the essence of the this circle is the expression of sunyata, that is--nothing superfluous, nothing lacking."
