Ogawa Machiko(1946-) is a very influential potter in the contemporary Japanese ceramic scene and she's won the Japan Ceramic Society Award as well as having exhibitions at major galleries and museums---a look at her Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura exhibition can be viewed at e-yakimono.net
I visited her this weekend and will be offering three chawan and nine guinomi in the coming days. First I'd like to share this complex plate that she made with a Shigaraki/Seto blended clay and then a slab of porcelain on top. She etched in a floral design before firing again with a light blue glaze, fascinating. The form was a tsubo-jar at first and Ogawa then sliced it to form the 'platter' form. Ogawa's home sits atop a hill overlooking the Sagami Bay and is filled with all kinds of African art works and mingei works she gathered when she lived in Africa. Ogawa's works transcend borders and 'hits' one directly in the heart. In perfect condition, 10cm.tall, 34.5cm.long and 24cm.deep, a box will be extra.
