Echizen is one of Japan's oldest stonewares fired in Echizen prefecture since the Heian period; it's known as one of the outdated term 'Six Old Kilns.' One of the leading--and one of only very few--traditional Echizen potters today is Kitajima Shigemitsu(b.1942). His work is bold with rich natural ash glazes based on Kamakura and Muromachi period forms; he established his kiln in 1975 after first studying oil painting(1961) and then ceramic art from 1973. He recently showed us some recently fired tsubo and I selected only one seen here. It has a strong form with an unusual five lug formation around the shoulder as well as incised comb markings; combining these features with the rich ash glaze and deep 'clay flavor' creates a very fine Echizen tsubo indeed. In perfect condition with a signed box, 29cm.tallx31.5cm, signed on base.
