Hagi potter Hatano Hideo(b.1971)studied under his father Zenzo, a Hagi Intangible Cultural Property. I have long admired Zenzo's work for its gracefulness, splendid clay, and exquisite glazes. I later found out Hideo has been mixing the latter two for a number of years. Hideo studied sculpture at Tama Art University and ceramics in Kyoto. His work was selected for inclusion at the Japan Traditional Arts and Crafts exhibition in 2002 and 2004 and also again in 2005 where his piece was selected for a regional poster---a very grand achievement for such a young potter. His work also has grace and dignity and I love the Hatano glazes. His sculptural background shows on this white Hagi glazed handle bucket that is good for flowers or for serving food, or simply as is. Hideo's work is most often thrown very light and the main round vessel here is quite light indeed; the strong handle balances the piece not only in weight yet also in proportion. The tip of the handle has been glazed brown and appears as if wood, the lower portion of the vessel as well. A very strong piece by Hideo, in perfect condition, 20cm.tallx46.5x36.5, stamped on base. We also have one chawan and nine fun small ichirin-one flower vases to be offered soon.
