Bizen 'Vase' by Miyao Masahiro
Miyao Masahiro(b.1970)is a young Bizen artist to certainly keep an eye on. His awards have been piling up and that included a major award last autumn at the 53rd annual Japanese Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition. The award was Nihon Kogei Kai Kai-cho Award selected by the chairman of the Japanese Traditional Arts and Crafts association. Miyao is only the third Bizen ceramic artist to be awarded a top award at this prestigious exhibition, the other two being Yamamoto Izuru and Isezaki Shin. His forms are fresh and his firings are quite good as well, as can be seen on the two 'vases' we recently selected. They also have pine ash applied near the base and this accounts for the blue and green tones. This is the shorter of the two and has a great firing that the front and portions of the back (rare) have a thick golden brown delicious goma covering. Such pieces are first rank and hard to come by. The form is also engaging and overall a very fine work by a Bizen ceramic artist to surely keep an eye on. In perfect condition with a signed box, 33cm.tallx23x21, signed on base.
