In Kuroda Ryoji's 1969 book 'Contemporary Chawan' he called Tamaoki one of Mino's five great 'hopefuls' who, along with Kato Seizo, Kato Takuo, Kato Kozo, and Suzuki Osamu, would carry Mino into the future. Well, two of this group are Living National Treasures and one is a Gifu Treasure, while Tamaoki was named a Tajimi City Intangible Cultural Property in 2002. Unfortunately, Seizo passed from this world too early to see his star rise, yet his son Yasukage would surely make his father proud. Tamaoki(b.1941) has had an impressive career, living up to Kuroda's prediction, that also includes winning the prestigious Japan Ceramic Society Prize in 1979. His list of exhibitions at leading department store galleries and private galleries is very long indeed and he was featured in the 1993 'Modern Japanese Ceramics in American Collections' held at the Japan Society in New York City. Anyway, this is a more recent work of his showing a splendid varying Oribe glaze over a helmet-like form. The combed incised lines add character and overall the glazing, form and combed lines create a very intriguing work indeed. In perfect condition with a signed box, 21cm.tallx18,signed on base. A similar work is shown from a 2004 Japan Ceramic Society exhibition; the photo is from their 'Tohsetsu' journal; other works shown include Kakiemon, Nakazato, Shimaoka, and Tokuda.
