Late Edo Period Bizen Figure Flask

A very shibui, old Bizen Ningyo-dokkuri (doll figure tokkuri flask) from the Edo Period (1603-1868). The tokkuri has triangular shape, with three main sides that are indented and pushed in for easy handling. On one side is one of the Shichifukujin (seven lucky gods) called Hotei, who was snuggly placed into an indentation on the facade. Please notice the happy face, this is a key point when evaluating such pieces; if the face is not clear--and there are plenty of those--the value is much less on a monetary and aesthetic level. This good example rarely comes out on the market, and is thus difficult to find. The form has a unique rhythm and movement, and this "tokkuri" (tokkuri were very large in the olden days) can be also used as a vase for flowers or simply for display. A fine antique, this piece is 22.1cm tall, kamijirushi mark on base, does not come with a box and is in perfect condition from Yellin's collection, as is the shown reclining Daruma, previews upon request.
