Bizen-Sue Vase by Yoshimoto Shuho
Veteran Bizen potter Yoshimoto Shuho(b.1938) looks back to the fifth through twelfth centuries for his inspiration. That's when the Sueki tradition was introduced from Korea using an anagama. More about sueki on e-yakimono.net Yoshimoto is the only potter in Bizen (out of 500 or so) who makes Bizen-Sue and he is a consummate potter with a great spirit in an austere, Shinto spirit. This Bizen-Sue vase has a strong-confident form and richly subtle natural ash-glaze covering in light ghostly greens and grays touched with wispy blues. A perfect vessel for flower in perfect condition with a signed box, 25.5cm.tall, signed on base.
