Often times it's hard to differentiate Bizen from Tamba, and say Iga from Shigaraki. Clues are found in forms, firing and clay and this holds true for all the styles mentioned as examples. For Tamba vs. Bizen, Tamba works usually have more of a purplish and metallic tone as seen on this stately jar by veteran potter Nishihata Sueharu(b.1926), father of Tadashi. It has a confident form--reminiscent of old Korean henko jars--and classic Tamba firing. In perfect condition with a signed box, 20cm.tallx18x15, signed on base.
