An apprentice takes on many roles in a traditional setting; of course he/she works very hard in the studio, yet they also do other tasks, such as picking up clients from the train station. When I used to go visit Kakurezaki Ryuichi in the early 90s I remember Ishii Takahiro as 'my driver' on a few occasions. Well, he has since graduated from his apprenticeship with Kakurezaki and established his own kiln two years ago. He's yet to build a wood-burning kiln--yet will fire a 'rented' one soon-- and now fires in a gas kiln, the same way Kakurezaki did for glazed wares. And Ishii has taken the 'Kakurezaki Way' for glazed wares and created his own forms based on his masters. Ishii visited our gallery yesterday with freshly fired tokkuri and guinomi of which we offer in these four listings. Each is quite excellent for sake enjoyment from a young potter--Ishii is 31 and studied with Kakurezaki from 2000-2005--and all are basic tokkuri and guinomi size, signed and with a signed box. Tokkuri are all 18,000 yen and guinomi are 12,000 yen. Exchange rates can be calculated at xe.com/ucc/
