I am relentless in sourcing works for certain potters and one is the late great Mashiko potter Murata Gen(1904-1988). My network in Japan--built over two decades--knows this and thus works often appear out of the blue. This chawan comes from a Yokohama collection and is Ido in form and Karatsu in glazing with a strong mingei-Mashiko overall balance; Murata was a big fan of Karatsu. The overall tone is light summer green and warm Irabo browns on the body, with a neat 'fire color' tinged foot-kodai. It's on the large side for a chawan at 8.6cm.tallx15, stamped 'mu' inside the kodai. The guinomi has an underglaze iron arabesque design and a very soft crackled transparent glaze over the nuka glaze. A fine sipping guinomi--the 'pool' is perfect--in perfect condition with a signed box, stamped 'mu' inside the fine kodai and is 4.8cm.tallx7.5.
