Kutani Tea Jar by Tokuda YasokichiIII (Masahiko)
Some of the more interesting Kutani glazes have come out of the Tokuda kiln. The current third generation is Tokuda Yasokichi lll, born Masahiko, who in 1997 was designated a Living National Treasure for his mastery of Kutani glazes. His forms are simple and graceful as can be seen here on this traditional shaped tea jar with three 'ears.' The color scheme is hypnotizing in its gradation of blues greens and yellows. Masahiko became YasokichiIII in 1988 and this piece dates pre-1988, most likely to around 1978 when a Masahiko jar was shown at the Suntory Museum in Tokyo; in perfect condition, 21.5cm.tallx20, signed 'Kutani Masahiko' on base, with a signed box.
