Iga Vase by Nagaoka Masami/Previews
I'll never forget a few years back when I took a rather well-known US ceramic artist to Nagaoka Masami's studio, all he could say was "awesome!" when viewing Nagaoka's work. And he said it countless times, so many that in fact it's now one of the few English words Nagaoka knows. Nagaoka Masami(b.1948) fires two small anagama in the hills of the Izu peninsula importing clay from Shigaraki. His forms are always strong and the aforementioned 'A' word. This four-sided eared vase shows the innovative way Nagaoka reinterprets 16th century Iga vases. His yakishime (high-fired unglazed stoneware) effects are superbly evident here; the vase was fired face down on shells and this accounts for the heavily encrusted ash back and greenish bidoro glass glazed front, both are the highlights of the firing. In perfect condition with a signed box, 29cm.tall, signed on base. Preview photos of other seen Nagaoka works gladly sent upon request.
