Shigaraki ceramic artist Kato Takahiko (b.1952) is totally unique in his approach to this ancient style, having more in common with a Kyoto cosmopolitan sensibility than a country potter. That makes sense as Sodeisha founding member Suzuki Osamu took Kato under his wing at a very early age, right around elementary school age in fact. Suzuki was also an admirer of Kato's work as he matured in his 20s. This piece was recently fired and continues with Kato's shinogi arched forms, this time captured in an elongated form; of course classic Shigaraki firing characteristics are seen. Along with Kohyama Yasuhisa--they're neighbors--Kato is taking Shigaraki in exciting new directions. Kato has shown in galleries throughout Japan and his work has been exhibited in many juried exhibitions. In perfect condition with a signed box, 13cm.tallx47.5x8.8, signed on base. Other Kato works shown can be previewed on request, we also have a few tokkuri.
