Hanging Scroll by Watanabe Kazan (1793-1841)
Origin: Japan
Period: Edo Period
Material: Ink on paper
Size: H: 50.6cm; L: 58cm
Flower and rock arragement, signed Kazan Gaishi Noboru; sealed Noboru and Watanabe Noboru.
Apart from his great reputation as a painter Watanabe Kazan was equally known as a pioneer in Western studies in Japan and as
a cultural and national hero who was forced to commit suicide by
the Tokugawa government in 1841. Kazan first studied painting
with Kaneko Kinryo (1756-1817) and then with Tani Buncho
(1763-1840) and showed an endless curiosity and willingness to
try new styles and methods.
The mounting appears to date from the mid to late 19th century, and the painting is worn in a manner which indicates it was unmounted for some time before this was applied or removed and remounted here.
Two collector's seals on the back of the mounting.
Mounting: 128.5 x 63.5 cm
Wooden box
