lacuqered wooden figure
China, Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220)
H: 34 inch, L: 12 4/5 inch

A crane standing on the back of a tiger - so a combination of longevity and strength. The animals are carved of eight separate pieces of wood and lacquered. Originally the piece was lacquered in black and red, but during the process of dehydration the red colour faded. These kind of wooden and lacquered objects were used as burial object. And they survived due to the fact that the tombs were wet tombs. Either they got flooded by purpose or weather conditions.
