Yamauchi Issei, born 1929 Japan, Showa period, 20th century Folding screen, two panels, Furosaki Byobu Paper on paper H: 28 1/3 inch, W: 70 4/5 inch (total width) Yamauchi Issei, Living National Treasure (Obara dyied paper work) born in Aichi. Issei excels in paper art. Was first aprentice with Fujii Tatsukichi (1881-1964) in 1948. From 1953 on he exhibited repeatedly at the Nitten, for which he was also invited to serve as a juror several times. Among Yamauchi Issei's commissions: 1958 gift to Douglas MacArthur (1957-1997), Ambassador to Japan 1957-1961, commissioned by the government of Aichi prefecture. 1962 gift to Edwin O.Reischauer (1910-1990), US-Ambassador to Japan 1961-1966; commissioned by the government of Aichi prefecture. 1970 gift to Armin H. Meyer (born 1914), US Ambassador to Japan 1969-72; commissioned by Toyota Motor Corporation. 1979 Gift to the Emperor of Japan; commissioned by the government of Aichi prefecture. Among the prizes awarded to Issei Yamauchi: the Gold Prize at the 1965 Nitten, the Ministry of Education New Crafts Prize in 1984, and in 1997 the Prime Minister's Prize. |
