Nonya Ware Plate w/ Auspicious Symbols - 19th Century
A Nonya plate with a foliated base painted with pomegranates, peaches and bats symbolizing fruitfulness, prosperity and happiness. Nonya wares are over-glaze polychrome enamelled porcelains made in Jingdezhen in the Kiangsi province of China for the Straits Chinese, or Babas, whose female counterparts are called Nonyas, hence the term Nonya ware. Nonya wares were mainly reserved for festive occasions and special functions. Size: L. 20cm. W. 14.2cm. H. 4.3cm. Condition: No repairs
