A very rare white porcelain Song qingpai ewer with a clear pale bluish glaze. The body and shoulder of the vase have skillfully executed free-flowing scraffiato designs of florals and leaves. The tall cylindrical neck is encircled at the base by two horned dragons whose heads meet at the spout. The grooved loop handle is further decorated with eight small balls. The glaze pools in some areas creating a beautiful light watery blue. The dragon is an auspicious symbol - having two dragons on a ewer is very rare. Period: Song (10th Century) Size: Height = 19.5 cm (7-11/16 inches) Condition: Small chip at the spout. Small break at the tip of one dragon's tail. One dragon's whisker is chipped off (see photos). There is crazing from age on the glaze - especially at the neck and the strap handle - but they add to the overall beauty of the piece. For a delicate piece of this age, it is remarkable that it is in this fine a condition. |
