Frans Wildenhain Stoneware Cylinder Vase
1960s/1970s chamotte stoneware. Unglazed on the outside with a thick black glaze inside and in the semi-spherical indentation. Nice orange/brown color to the clay. Frans Wildenhain (1905-1980) was Bauhaus trained (as was his wife, potter Marguerite Wildenhain). He studied Zen Buddhism and painted in Japan. This pot evokes both Bauhaus ceramics and Zen simplicity. A cylinder vase by Marguerite (#192 Keramik und Bauhaus, Berlin 1989) makes an interesting comparison. MARKS: "Frans Wildenhain" is hand-incised in base. CONDITION: One 1/4 inch chip at rim. To the right of this chip is an in-the-making firing flaw, consisting of a 1 and 1/2 inch crack with black glaze flowing over it. Five inches to the right is another chip on the rim, about aspirin-sized.
