This soft paste porcelain covered cup and saucer was produced in Germany by Hochst in 1775. The saucer has a diameter of 6 1/2 inches and the cup is 6 inches high. The saucer has a deep well for the cup to fit into so that it does not slide off. This was called a "trembleuse" by the French. The set is decorated in the most opulent fashion. The style and decoration are taken from the French Sevres factory. The scrolled borders are accented with raised gilding. There are applied fruits and leaves on the lid and on each side of the handle. The front of the cup has a landscape with figures dressed in 18th century costumes. It is beautifully hand painted with bright colors.
Condition: The cup has a chip on the rim near the handle. It is towards the back of the cup. The leaves on the top of the lid are slightly rough. Gilding on the rim of the saucer is worn. Flaws such as these are part of the life story of a 200 year old cup and saucer. It is a wonder that such a rare, fragile item has survived at all.

The fine quality hard paste porcelain has intricately pierced borders on the rim and foot. They are almost like lace. The center of the compote has a beautifully hand painted scene of a lady and courtiers of the 18th century in a garden. The painting is well done in beautiful detail and vivid colors. It is reminiscent of the work produced by the prominent Meissen factory. The pierced borders have panels of colorful flowers and are outlined in gold. There are borders of ornate gilding framing the central scene. Even the underside of the compote is painted with flowers and gilding.
Condition: Excellent. This is an extraordinary Dresden compote that has been cherished and kept in great condition for more than a century.

This painting on porcelain was made in Germany in the late 19th century. It is not signed and there are no markings to identify the manufacturer. We took the back off to see if there were any markings and found none. The plaque is oval and measures 5 3/4 inches long by 4 1/4 inches wide. The painting is of a young gypsy woman with a tambourine. The portrait is executed with exquisite detail. Her hair and draped clothing are done with photographic precision. The features on her face and hands are superb. The talent that this plaque exemplifies comes from a formidable artist. The plaque is mounted in a mahogany and oak frame.
Condition: Excellent.
