Hayley Lever, Sunset on the Sea, St. Ives
Sunset on the Sea, Hayley Lever 1876 - 1958, oil on canvas mounted to panel, 9" by 12 1/2", signed lower right, 15 3/8" by 18 3/4" framed in carved gilded reproduction frame, scattered retouch to sky. Artist was born in Australia, attended Adelaide's Prince Alfred College, Ashton's Academy of Arts 1891-93. Traveled to London to study art in 1894, settling in St. Ives 1899. Studied under British Impressionists Julius Olsson and Algernon Talmage. Influenced by Van Gogh while traveling the continent 1908. Made American debut 1910, exhibiting at Carnegie International in Pittsburgh. Traveled to NYC 1912, returning to live permanently a year later. Taught Art Students League of New York 1919-1931. Member National Academy of Design, National Arts Club, Salons of America, Society of Independent Artists, and Woodstock Art Association. Exhibited Art Institute of Chicago, Corcoran Gallery Biennial, MacBeth Gallery, Panama Pacific Exhibition of 1915, Pennsylvania Academy, Vose Galleries, Whitney Museum of Art.
