| Cottage Beside the River 1895, Alfred Cornelius Howland, oil on panel, 4 1/2" by 7 7/8", initialed and dated lower left, 9 5/8" by 13 1/8" housed in high quality reproduction gilded Hudson River school fluted cove frame, tiny losses to sky edge from previous framing, no restorations. Artist studied Dusseldorf Academy with Albert Flamm, then turned to Barbizon School of landscape, befriending and working with Camille Corot, Jean Francois Millet, and Theodore Rousseau. Returned to America 1865, associating with Winslow Homer and Homer D. Martin. Member of Brooklyn Art Association, National Academy of Design, and Artists Fund Society of New York. Exhibited Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago 1893 Columbian Exhibition, Panama Pacific Exhibition of 1915, Paris Exposition 1889, and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. | ||
