Charles Paul Gruppe, Seashore Piggyback
Landscape and marine painter Charles Paul Gruppe 1860 - 1940, Seashore Piggyback, oil on canvas, 15" by 11", signed lower right, 20 1/4" by 16 1/4" housed in high quality carved gilded period reproduction frame, lined with inpainting to edges, left side of midocean. Artist moved from Canada to Rochester, New York as a child, traveled throughout Europe and Holland at age 21 to study art, but was largely self-taught. Built a home and studio in fishing village of Katwyk Ann Zee, elected to Pulchre Studio in the Hague, an unusual accomplishment for an American. Members of the Dutch Royal family collected his work. Moved back to New York City 1909, then to Cape Ann 1925. Exhibited American Watercolor Society, Art Institute of Chicago, Boston Art Club, National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy, Rockport Art Association, Salmagundi Club, Salons of America, Society of Independent Artists, St. Louis Exposition-World's Fair 1904. Member American Federation of the Arts, National Arts Club, New York Watercolor Society.
