Pennsylvania Impressionist John Willard Raught 1857 - 1931, Calm Sea 1905, watercolor on paper, 10 7/8" by 14 7/8" sight, signed and dated lower left, 22 3/4" by 26 5/8" housed under glass in carved, gilded period reproduction frame, mild central vertical acid burn from previous backing board, no restorations apparent. Likely to be a surviving work painted during a trip to Maine in 1905, most were destroyed by a fire in his Rookery Building studio in Scranton. Artist studied Academie Julian under Gustave Boulanger, Jules-Joseph Lefebvre and National Academy of Design. Member of American Federation of Arts, Brooklyn Art Association, Salmagundi Club. Exhibited Art Institute of Chicago, Boston Art Club, Brooklyn Art Association, Chicago 1893 Columbian Exhibition, National Academy of Design, Paris Salon, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, St. Louis Exposition, 1904 Worlds Fair. Died 1931 in Dunmore, Pennsylvania.
