Charles Courtney Curran, Wild Azaleas on the Mountain
Impressionist figure, genre, and landscape painter Charles Courtney Curran 1861 - 1942, Wild Azaleas on the Mountain Top 1933, oil on board, 12" by 16", signed and dated lower right, signed and identified by inventory number verso, 20 5/8" by 24 5/8" housed in contemporary gilded composition frame with linen liner, scattered retouch to mid horizon area, 1/4" loss to right upper corner edge of board hidden by framing edge. Artist studied Academie Julian with Benjamin Constant and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre, Art Students League of New York (where he would later also teach), and National Academy of Design. Was a leader of the Cragsmoor Art Colony, an art center in the Hudson River Valley, dividing his time between there and NYC, teaching at Pratt Institute, Cooper Union, and the National Academy. Exhibited American Watercolor Society, Art Institute of Chicago, Boston Art Club, Brooklyn Art Association, Chicago 1893 Columbian Exposition, Lotos Club, National Academy of Design, Paris Salon, Pennsylvania Academy, Salmagundi Club, Society of Washington Artists D.C., St. Louis Exposition-World's Fair 1904.
