| Portrait, still-life, and genre painter Alphaeus Philemon Cole 1876 - 1988, Rambler Roses, oil on canvas, 14 1/8" by 18 1/8", signed lower left, 1964 Salmagundi Spring Auction tag with title verso, although date of painting is likely earlier, housed in period gilded carved frame, scattered retouch to edges and background, largest right lower corner. Artist studied in Paris at Ecole des Beaux Arts and Academie Julian under Laurens and Constant. Also studied Cooper Union Art School where he would later teach, as well as Grand Central Art School. Named Associate of National Academy 1930 and later Academician 1941. Exhibited Allied Artists of America, American Watercolor Society, Art Institute of Chicago, Grand Central Art Galleries, Hudson Valley Art Association, Lyme Art Association, National Academy of Design, National Arts Club, Paris Salons, Royal Academy of London, and Salmagundi Club. | ||
