Tyler 1885 - 1976, Shimmering Sea, Port of Papeete, Tahiti, 1921, oil on canvas, 16 1/4" by 20 1/2", signed/dated/identified lower left, 24 1/4" by 28 1/4" housed in gilded toned French style frame with painted and linen liner, recently fully conserved with cleaning and minor inpaint, report available upon request. Artist studied Art Students League of New York. Traveled to Tahiti, making pilgrimage to Gauguin's grave, in the early 1920's, period from which this painting originates. Lived and worked in Knoxville, Tennesee, moved to Greenwich Village, New York City, and finally to Kent, Connecticut in 1947. Participated WPA, Federal Arts Project, painting murals for public buildings. Exhibited Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Salons of America, Society of Independent Artists. | ||
