John George Brown, Ready for the Sea 1905
John George Brown, 1831-1913, Ready for the Sea, oil on canvas, 30" by 25", framed in period Newcomb-Macklin frame, 35 1/2" by 30 1/2", signed and dated lower left, excellent condition, fairly recent light clean/varnish and strip line with very minor retouch to canvas edges. Artist studied in England and Scotland before emigrating to America in 1853 and becoming a student at the National Academy of Design 1857. By 1863 he was elected member of the Academy, served as its Vice President 1899-1903, and taught its students. By 1900 he was one of the most celebrated, skilled, and successful painters of children.
