Girl in White Smocked Dress 1898, Susan Merrill Ketcham 1841 - 1930, oil on canvas, signed and dated upper right, 14" by 10", 21 7/8" by 17 7/8" framed in 22K gold leaf Stanford White reproduction frame, lined on original stretcher bars, restorations to left hairline and edges of canvas, minute scattered retouch to facial area. Artist trained Indiana School of Art and Art Institute of Chicago, founded Art Association of Indiana in 1883. At age 44 traveled to Europe to study for 2 1/2 years then returned to the United States to study at Art Students League of New York under William Merritt Chase and Edward A. Bell. In 1898 lived adjacent to Carnegie Hall and spent summers in Ogunquit, Maine, eventually managing Charles Woodbury Summer School from 1916 onwards. She returned to Indiana in 1927. Exhibited Art Institute of Chicago, Boston Art Club, Chicago 1893 Columbian Exposition, Corcoran Gallery Biennial, Hoosier Salon, National Association of Women Artists, National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Society of Independent Artists, St. Louis Exposition, 1904 Worlds Fair.
