We specialize in the contemporary arts of Mexico, Haiti, Cuba and Nicaragua.
Our 20th Century paintings by visionary 1st and 2nd Generation Haitian Masters include early and vintage paintings that are rare to the Haitian art market. Our group of Haitian and Caribbean paintings are comprised from four prominent art collections, located in the New York City Area. These private collections are from former Haitian art gallery owners and dealers (who have been selling Caribbean and Latin American Master paintings for many decades). Our Cuban paintings were purchased directly from artist studio's in Cuba and were brought into the United States with a special cultural permit.
Arte del Pueblo also offers a fine selection of European Old Masters paintings, as well as 19th and 20th Century works of art. We are please to offer rare and important animalist paintings by Charles Van den Eycken and Vincent de Vos. Our European inventory features works by Karel Appel and 19th Century paintings by Auguste Serrure, Henricus Engelbertus Reijntjens, Burls Louis Joseph, Carlier Max and David de Noter (for De Noter, please contact gallery for digital images).
Arte del Pueblo currently represents the works of over 80 master artists and artisans.
The majority of our art has been acquired directly from artists or from traveling to the countries where the art is made. Our artisan works are made in clay, embroidery, metal and wood. These hand made and one of a kind items celebrate the achievements of regional Folk Arts in their representation to local popular sentiment, ethnic or religious identity. Fine artisan examples; include tribal jewelry of the Arabian Peninsula, Oaxacan woodcarvings, antique Mexican retablos and embroidery by the Living Maya and Huichol peoples.
What does "Arte del Pueblo" stand for? In a literal translation, it means “Art of the People” or “Art of the Town”. In Spanish, these words can represent art anointed with a popular spirit or sentiment.
