From the series 'Faces of Latin America' 'Rostro I' by the contemporary Nicaraguan artist Efren Medina Wash Mixed Media (watercolor, ink, oil, gold leaf) on paper Dimensions: 18 by 14 in. Made in 1991 Efren Medina has a thirty year trajectory in the plastic arts. Medina studied at Nicaragua's National School of the Arts, under the tutleage of Rodrigo Penalba. As early member of the Praxis Group (that formed in the early 1970's)-- Efren Medina has been instrumental to the formation of a Nicaraguan Modern Art School. The series 'Faces of Latin America' is one of several themes unique to this artist. 'Rostros' or 'Faces' depict (in a modernist/abstract style)the realities found in the third world. The series formed out of the social conditions prevelant to Nicaragua, in particular to a civil war-- which in 1979 ousted a 41 year Dictatorial Dynasty. 'Faces of Latin America' is a testimonial to the social, psychological and economic realities of oppressed peoples. Efren Medina no longer paints these images, but the series 'Faces of Latin America' is a excellent example of how art can be an instrument to reflect the sentiments and histories of an era. |
