This large (16") vintage Aya kachina (katsina) is clearly hand-carved with the traditional pocket knife and files. However, the occasional rough spot of carving is more than made up for by the careful, clear painting. Please see all photos for details, as he does have a few age-related condition issues. The kachina was made to hang on the wall and still has his original neck-string, but at some point a wooden base was nailed to his feet; this has been removed and will be sent along with the ...click for details

$250

This is a classic vintage kachina (katsina) from about the 1960s--fully dressed in a fabric kilt and highly detailed sashes. His mocassins have nice fringes, and he has all his original yarn decorations, some of which are a bit faded from time. He has remnants of his original feathers (please view all photos for condition), and holds fragments of wands or rattles--whatever the objects were originally, they are long gone. Maker is unknown, but the detail and quality are very good. Notice the keto ...click for details

Here is a different idea in pottery, yet still made in the traditional hand-shaped, dung-fired manner. This small bell is about 2.75 inches across the opening and approximately the same height. The clapper is also made of clay, and the dangler is made from a piece of broken pottery with a fire-shadow. Assembled on a sturdy rawhide thong. The bell does not ring like one of metal, but rather makes a comfortable “clink” sound. When hanging, the total length including the shard dangler is 13.5 inche ...click for details

One can tell what kachinas have been coming to dance in the plazas by what dolls the carvers make—and in 2009 many different representations of Kisa became available. This nice little one was made by Josie Seklestewa, one of the few female carvers of kachina dolls. It is a simple doll but very carefully carved and painted, and would be a great choice for a new collector. Kisa stands 6 3/4 inches high, and his side feathers add another inch or so.

Hakto is the “wood carrier,” a kachina borrowed from the Zuni pueblo. He is not one of the dramatic kachina figures who are highly decorated and carry weapons—but he is an old kachina and an important one. Hakto helps to ensure a supply of cottonwood, which is used not only for kachina carving but for many ceremonial and practical items. This doll stands 11 inches tall and has a topknot of parrot feathers as well as his blue wand and black-and-white yarn tassels.
