$2195

A very fine Art Deco 14K yellow gold necklace of filigree links centering a collet-set carved jadeite disc suspending another filigree link and a large oval plaque of jadeite carved in a floral pattern. The workmanship of the filigree is superior, with finely detailed millegraining on nearly all the surfaces. The use of yellow gold in filigree jewelry of the period is quite unusual, but is very attractive as a foil to the rich green of the gemstones. The jade plaques nicely carved in a traditional floral pattern. The stones are semi-translucent, medium-textured, and moderately mottled from very saturated green to a light slightly grayish-green. There are no signs of dye. The necklace has an interesting invisible clasp mechanism that is marked "Pat. Appl'd For". Tested and guaranteed 14K.

Origin: America, ca. 1920. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 16" long; pendant jade drops 2-7/16" from the bottom of the jade disc. Weight: 23.1 grams.

Origin: America, 1924. Condition: very good overall, the center crystal has minor discoloration. Size: 7-5/8" long, 11/16" wide. Weight: 18.3 grams.

$975

A wonderful Art Deco 14K yellow gold baton-link long chain, studded at intervals with oval moss agate cabochons. The long chain was a traditional Victorian style, but in this case was updated by replacing the usual small links with long baton-style links. The resulting linear look would have been considered much more modern and stylish. The links are interrupted by nine 7.5x9.0mm moss agate cabochons. The gemstones have very nice medium- to dark-green lacy moss-like inclusions against the colorless transparent background. Notice that the stones are set closer together toward the middle of the chain, and farther apart toward the ends. The clasp is marked “14K”.

Origin: America, ca. 1920. Condition: excellent. Size: 28” long. Weight: 18.9 grams.

$2795

An absolutely stunning Art Deco cross pendant in 18K yellow gold accented with diamonds and sapphires. The body of the cross is worked in pierced yellow gold, centering a nearly 2/3-carat round old European cut diamond collet-set in platinum. The piercing lightens the appearance of the cross and creates the visual effect of rays emanating from the central diamond. Each of the four arms of the cross is bordered with caliber-cut natural blue sapphires of fine quality, and terminates in a band of round brilliant-cut diamonds bead-set in platinum. The corners of the junctions of the arms are ornamented with small diamonds collet-set in platinum and cabochon sapphires prong-set in gold. The overall design is very angular, heightening the strong Art Deco treatment of this most traditional of designs. The center diamond is estimated at G color, SI2 clarity, and the smaller diamonds are of similar quality. The sapphires have excellent color saturation and clarity. This is, without a doubt, the finest Art Deco cross we’ve seen. The cross is stamped with the French “tete d’aigle” for 18K gold and has an indistinct maker’s mark.

Origin: France, ca. 1925. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 2” x 1-9/16” (excluding bale). Weight: 11.5 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: diamond, 2.5 carats; sapphire, 3.6 carats.

14K Gold, Montana Sapphire & Pearl “V” Victory Brooch

$1750

Extraordinary patriotic “V for Victory” brooch in 14K yellow gold set with Montana sapphires and pearls. The quality of workmanship is superb, and the stones are magnificent. During World War II, it was very difficult to get genuine gemstones because of blockades, so most jewelers re-set stones from older pieces or used synthetic stones. This brooch makes use of one of America’s few truly gem-quality minerals—Montana sapphires, probably from the Yogo Gulch area. The square-cut sapphires are invisibly set, copying the style created by Van Cleef & Arpels in the Art Deco period. Groups of three sapphires alternate with prong-set pearls of very nice quality. The bottom of the “V” is set with an old European cut sapphire. The gold setting is very finely millegrained.

The most amazing part of this brooch, however, is that it is a mechanical piece. It can be straightened to be worn as a bar pin when one is feeling less patriotic. Even opened as a bar pin, however, the brooch suggests airplane propellers which was another popular patriotic motif. Victory pins were popular, but those in gold and set with genuine stones are quite rare. This is the ONLY mechanical example we’ve ever seen. The side is marked “Pat. Apl’d For” and also bears an indistinct maker’s mark.

Origin: America, 1940-45. Condition: mint. Size: 1-13/16” x 1-13/16” in the “V” formation; 3-1/2” x 1/4" in bar formation. Weight: 7.0 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: sapphire, 2.81 carats.
