A very nice vintage H. Stern style "Sputnik" charm or pendant worked in 18K yellow gold and collet-set with a variety of colorful gemstones including amethyst, citrine, aquamarine, pink tourmaline and green tourmaline. This design was popularized by Stern, the world's largest source of colored gemstones, to show off the range of colored stones available from Brazilian mines. The pointy design was reminiscent of the first Soviet satellite and was nicknamed "Sputnik". A variety of pieces were made in this style, but charms and pendants are among the most difficult to find. Tested and guaranteed 18K.

Origin: Brazil, ca. 1965. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 7/8" diameter (excluding jump ring). Weight: 5.2 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: 6.07 cts.

SOLD, PLEASE VISIT US AGAIN!

A very pretty 18K gold multigem "Sputnik" pendant in the style of H Stern. Stern, the world's largest dealer in colored gemstones, created this design to showcase the wonderful array of colored gemstones native to Brazil. Amethysts, aquamarines, citrines, garnets, and green and pink tourmalines are collet-set above the gold dome. The resulting appearance was considered very modern and was popularly named after the early Russian space satellite. Each piece has a unique look depending upon the particular selection and arrangement of stones. Rings were the most popular pieces in this pattern, and pendants are extremely difficult to find. The bale is marked "18K". The pendant is suspended from a very well-made 22K yellow gold faceted 24" chain.

Origin: pendant, Brazil; chain, Italy; both ca. 1960. Condition: excellent. Size: pendant, 15/16" diameter; chain, 24" long. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: 6.33 carats.

$450

An elegant modernist-style brooch in 14K yellow gold accented with pearls, diamonds and sapphires. The brooch is composed of a pair of gold arcs, one highly-polished and the other textured. The intersection of the arcs is set with a cluster of variously sized cultured pearls interspersed with prong-set round brilliant-cut diamonds and blue sapphires. The pearls range in size from 3.6mm to 6.75 mm, and are of very fine Mikimoto-like quality. The body color is cream with a silvery overtone. The nacre is thick and the surfaces are good. The sapphires and diamonds are also of good quality and nice color. The back is marked “14K”.

Origin: America, ca. 1965. Condition: excellent, all original. Size: 2-9/16” x 1-5/8”. Weight: 12.0 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: diamond, .06 carat; sapphire, .2 carat.

PENDING

A magnificent 14K yellow gold modernist cuff necklace set with approximately 28 carats of various colorful gemstones. The matte finish of the gold surface contrasts beautifully with the various gemstones—chosen not only for their color, but also for their brilliance. The stones, each cut differently, include (L-R) cabochon-cut emerald, oval mixed-cut citrine, rectangular-cut morganite, round mixed-cut aquamarine, emerald-cut amethyst, oval-cut iolite, and pear-cut rubellite. The necklace is entirely hand-hammered from gold sheets. The hammer marks are still visible on the reverse. The collets rise dramatically above the surface of the necklace, thus projecting the gemstones forward. The back is indistinctly signed. The necklace looks very much like the work of noted Welsh goldsmith Sara Amos, who now works in South Carolina.

Origin: America, ca. 1960. Condition: the amethyst and morganite each have a flake on the back which probably happened during the making, but this is not noticeable when being worn; otherwise excellent condition; all original. Size: interior, 4-1/2” x 4”; width, 1” at front; back opening, 2-1/2” (could be expanded by professionally cutting down the back edges). Weight: 56.0 grams. Approximate Total Gemstone Weight: emerald, .85 carat; citrine, 4.7 carats; morganite, 5.88 carats; aquamarine, 7.2 carats; amethyst, 5.58 carats; iolite, 1.88 carats; rubellite, 1.87 carats.
