A very fine and rare Meiji Japanese brooch worked in silver, gold and shakudo. The brooch depicts a vase or censer to one side overflowing with dozens of incredibly detailed chrysanthemums. The pin is principally worked in silver, with gold highlights on the flowers and shakudo or shibuichi on the vase. The workmanship is of the very finest quality and shows the hand of a master. The silver plaque on the back is perfectly fitted to the front and is decorated with an elegant inlaid floral and geometric pattern. The backing is original and is not a conversion. It appears to have been a buckle and then later converted to a brooch with the addition of a pinstem and clasp. The edge of the brooch is signed, but the maker is unknown to us. Origin: Japan, ca. 1880. Condition: excellent, sharp detail. Size: 2-15/16" x 1-1/8". Weight: 37.5 grams.

A lovely sterling silver Art Nouveau brooch by Unger Bros. The design features a young woman's face in profile, the side of her head partially hidden by a large pansy blossom and foliage. In the language of flowers, the pansy signified "remembrance" and a pin of this sort might have been worn to convey that sentiment. The details are beautifully worked. The back of the pin retains the original pinstem and c-clasp, and is stamped with Unger's hallmark.Origin: America, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent, sharp detail, all original. Size: 1-1/4" x 1-3/8".
