A very fine Imperial Russian lacquer box by Vishniakov. The lid is decorated with a winter scene showing an empty troika, still tethered to its horse, located just outside a snow-covered log building. The scene is beautifully detailed. The interior is lacquered in the dark rust shade characteristic of Vishniakov.

Elegant early Victorian lacquered papier-mache round tray with Chinoiserie decoration depicting a court scene. The design, worked in metallic gold, silver and copper, shows three ladies in their garden overlooking the sea. One is contemplating a stringed instrument, one is tending to her robes, and the third appears to be having a cocktail! A very pretty Fedoskino lacquered papier-mache box, the hinged lid decorated with a realistic-style lake scene complet with typical birch trees found in near the Baltic coast of Russia. The scene is very finely painted. The lower corners are signed by an artist unknown to us and date "'74".

A delightful Georgian lacquered papier-maché snuffbox or tobacco box. The hinged cover is decorated with a handpainted scene depicting a court scene. The sides of the box are painted in colorful floral tracery against a dark green ground. The bottom is decorated with a large gilt medallion against a black background. A very nice folding corner shelf of lacquered papier-mache with metallic decoration of Chinese court scenes. One wall shows ladies riding in a rickshaw while the other shows ladies strolling in a court garden with their guardian. The scalloped edge of the shelf is decorated with a gilt edge.

A very nice lacquered papier-mache tabletop box, the cover with colorful Chinoiserie scene. The decoration depicts a noble lady and gentlemen being entertained by a troop of magicians in their garden. While two of the magicians look on, the third is juggling four balls. A stunning lacquered tea caddy from Russia’s Imperial era. The box is painted in the top and all four sides with complementary floral bouquets in a distinct Slavic style and color palette. The background is a greenish shade highlighted with an antique gold. The interior of the tea caddy is coated in the metallic finish used for tea caddies.

Handsome papier-mache tray with chinoiserie lacquered decoration from the reign of King Louis-Philippe. The scene depicts a group of Chinese astronomers watching a comet streaking through the sky. The decoration, in shades of metallic gold and silver, is very finely done. The tray probably dates to around 1835, when the appearance of Halley’s Comet created a sensation.

Very unusual Victorian papier-mache rocker blotter with lacquered Japonaise decoration in shades of gold, silver and copper. The design illustrates two pairs of Samurai engaged in war games. Lacquered items with Japonaise decoration became very popular in France, England and other European countries following the opening of Japan to international trade in the 1860s. A blotter is a most uncommon form.
