A magnificent early Victorian locket of carved elephant ivory. The carving is of such a level that the French city of Dieppe, renowned since the middle ages as a center of ivory carving, is the most likely origin. The workmanship is so perfect that when the cover is closed, the viewer cannot see that the piece is a locket. The hinge is completely concealed, and the only visible mechanical piece is a small gilt pin near the bottom that acts as a sort of latch to keep the cover closed. Many ca ...click for details
