A magnificent early Victorian locket of carved elephant ivory. The carving is of such a level that the French city of Dieppe, renowned since the middle ages as a center of ivory carving, is the most likely origin. The workmanship is so perfect that when the cover is closed, the viewer cannot see that the piece is a locket. The hinge is completely concealed, and the only visible mechanical piece is a small gilt pin near the bottom that acts as a sort of latch to keep the cover closed. Many ca ...click for details

Victorians were fascinated by astronomical events such as the regular appearance of comets. Halley’s comet, in particular, created a world-wide sensation and inspired jewelry designs for many years. Comet jewelry, such as this brooch worked in 14K gold and turquoise, usually displays a rounded head attached to a tail. This piece is quite unusual, however, in that it interprets the traditional comet shape in the Etruscan Revival style. The micro-beaded and wirework decoration is of the finest ...click for details

An amazing Victorian fob locket worked in 14K rose, green and yellow gold. The cover depicts a moose (yellow gold) grazing in a grassy field (green gold) with mountains (rose gold) in the distant background. This is certainly the only Victorian locket we've seen featuring a moose on the cover! The locket hangs from a frame suggestive of bamboo--a typical Aesthetic Movement design element. This locket was probably intended to hang from a gentleman's watch fob, hence the somewhat mascu ...click for details
