Absolutely phenomenal set of 12 signed sterling silver Hermes placecard holders in their original silk and velvet fitted box. Each placecard holder is made from a 17th or 18th century French silver jeton. Jetons were commemorative medallions issued by the Royal mint to acknowledge important events in the history of France. Each placecard holder is signed "Hermes Paris" and bears full French silver hallmarks. Five of the jetons date from the reign of Louis XIV (1643-1715). One of them commemorates the "British Attack on Brest" and shows Admiral Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, Comte de Toulouse on the front. Two of the others Louis' first wife, Queen Marie-Therese. All these medals date to the mid- to late-1600s. Five of the medals are from the reign of Louis XV (1715-74). One of them shows a young king, so would date from the 1720s. The seem to date from the 1750s. One medal is by Jean Duvivier and another is by C.N. Roettier. The remaining two medals are from the reign of Louis XVI (1774-92) and appear to date from the 1780s. Origin: France, converted to placecard holders circa 1930. Condition: placecard holders are in mint condition; the inside of the box lid has an ink mark. Size: approximately 1-3/8" x 1-1/8".
