Ancient Egyptian Naqada II Slate Palette - Type 67D
STOCK #: AE050611-10RS
CULTURE: Ancient Egyptian
DATE: Predynastic, Naqada II, 3200 B.C.
MATERIAL(S): "Slate" / Siltstone (grey-green) [please see "COMMENTS"]
DIMENSIONS: 5.2” (132 mm) long
CONDITION: One head lost in antiquity as seen. Otherwise Excellent.

COMMENTS: This predynastic grey-green "slate" palette is of the form 67D as described by Sir William Flinders-Petrie. The British Museum's example EA 32503 may also be closely referenced for comparable.

Evolved from a double headed bird form, one head was lost in antiquity, as seen. The item was collected and catalogued in 1932, as indicated by the number inked on the obverse. On the reverse is another catalogue number - E89.

Though we have described this item as being made of "slate," the use of this word may be somewhat of a misnomer. Palettes of the Naqada culture are mostly made of siltstone (not slate as often stated in the literature). Siltstone is a type of sedimentary rock common in the Northern and Central Eastern Desert. One ancient quarry is known near the Wadi Hammamat. The Hammamat siltstone is composed of silt-size grains; dark grey to greyish green colour; sand-size grains are not visible. For more background information on such palettes, please refer to the “Digital Egypt for Universities” website developed by University College London.

PROVENANCE: Thickly provenanced piece of the highest rarity. Details provided to purchaser.
