COMMENTS: This wonderful Han Dynasty Jade Cicada with its stylized design is most likely as what is known as a "funeral jade" or "tongue amulet." In Ancient China, cicadas were regarded as symbols of rebirth or immortality (similar to the reverence held by the Ancient Egyptians for the Scarab Beetle). Amulets like the one pictured were placed on the tongues of the deceased which, along with jade plugs placed at other parts of the body, were thought to preserve the vital spirit (or Qi) in as state of jade-like permanence.
