COMMENTS: This lovely, solid ancient Chinese buckle / mount prominently features a Foo (Fu) Lion or Foo (Fu) Dog ("Shi" in Chinese) in raised relief as its central element. There being no indigenous lions, it is thought that Buddhist travelers and traders brought stories of the great beasts to ancient China. These stories captivated the ancient Chinese and so the Foo (Fu) Lion / Dog, modelled after eye-witness descriptions and native dogs, was adopted as a potent protective symbol. Large Foo Lion statues still guard the entrances of Imperial palaces, temples, tombs and other places of importance. The Foo (Fu) Lion / Dog has become a readily identifiable symbol of Chinese culture the world over.

In addition to its central element, this piece is adorned with flowing scrollwork, leaves and blossoms. The loops which would have attached this piece to the greater whole, retain remnants of would have likely been an iron fastening pin. The small shiny spots on the piece may be traces of original gilding. This is a well executed and charming piece of authentic ancient Chinese bronze work.
