COMMENTS: This bust was likely part of a lager statue moulded from Nile clay which were frequently placed as votive offerings in the temples of Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt. Depicted is the god Harpocrates / Harpokrates which is the Greek version of the Egyptian, Har-pa-chered, also known as "Horus the Child" in modern English. He is depicted as a child, holding his finger to his mouth, a gesture symbolizing childhood in ancient Egyptian art. This gesture was misconstrued by the Greek and Roman conquerors as an exhortation of silence and consequently adopted Harpocrates as the God of secrecy and silence. The Egyptians often portrayed Harpocrates as a nude child, although this figure appears to be draped in robes indicative of Greek or Roman influence.

This is a wonderful opportunity to own an affordable, authentic piece of ancient art that represents a fusion of three of the greatest cultures in history.

PROVENANCE: From the private collection of a listed Canadian artist. The figure comes with a copy of an old sales receipt from an American dealer. Full provenance will be provided to the purchaser.
