Amedeo Modigliani, Livorno, Italy, 1884-1920. This Tete en Bleu is in bleu pencil, signed "a Lucie et Fuji Modigliani Condition is good, apprx 16.5"H by 11.5"W. The serious illnesses he suffered during his childhood persisted throughout his life. At age fourteen he began to study painting. He first experimented with sculpture during the summer of 1902 and the following year attended the Regio Istituto di Belle Arti in Venice. Early in 1906 Modigliani went to Paris where he settled in Montmartre and attended the Académie Colarossi. His early work was influenced by Toulouse-Lautrec, Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen, Gauguin and Cézanne. In the autumn of 1907 he met his first patron, Dr Paul Alexandre, who purchased works from him before World War I. Modigliani exhibited in the "Salon d’Automne" in 1907 and 1912 and in the "Salon des Indépendants" in 1908, 1910 and 1911. In 1909 Modigliani met Brancusi when both artists lived in Montparnasse. From 1909 to 1915, he concentrated on sculpture but he also drew and painted to a certain extent. However, the majority of his paintings date from 1916 to 1919, Modigliani's circle of friends first consisted of Max Jacob, Lipchitz and the Portuguese, sculptor Amedeo, de Souza-Cardoso and later included Chaim Soutine, Maurice Utrillo, Jules Pascin, Foujita, Molise Kisling and the Sitwells. His dealers were Paul Guillaume (1914-16) and Leopold Zborowski (by 1917). The only one-man show given the artist during his lifetime took place at the Galerie Berthe Weill in December 1917. In March 1917 Modigliani met Jeanne Hèbuterne who became his companion and model. From March or April 1918 until May 1919, they lived in the south of France, in both Nice and Cagnes. Modigliani died in Paris on 24 January 1920.

John Ulbricht, Cuba, Illinois, and working living in Majorca, Spain for many years, 1913-2007. He is known for Figural, Modernist and Abstract Compositions, Paintings and Drawings. These dynamic drawings represent his early original drawings from 1946-50 when he was living in the USA: Chicago and Denver, before moving to Majorca, Spain. His early work can be considered a period of peak artistic energy and exploration. They are pencil on paper out of his original drawings books from the estate of his Father in Law Robert Von Neumann, an important Midwestern wpa artist. Ulbricht has a long and productive artistic career and is listed in Who was Who in American Art. He has a extensive gallery and exhibition record and is in many museums including The National Portrait Gallery.

Ottavio Padovanino, Italian, 1582-1634. This stunning drawing is red chaulk and pencil on paper mounted on paper. It is 15"H by 10.6"W with the name Padovanino handwritten in pencil on the paper below the drawing. Verso is written Alessandro Varotari, Verona, 1588-1648, "Le Padovau...." The condition is good with minor foxing and a darkened edge due to framing. It was in a private collection in Chicago.

Jean Honore Fragonard, French, 1732-1806. This drawing is an oval in pencil of Gods with Angels. It is 10"h by 12"w on a board that is 14" by 16" with Jean Honore Fragonard with 1732-1806 written below it in pencil on the board under the drawing. It is framed in an older gold frame and is 20.5 by 22. Honore did many drawing and "cartoons" in preparation for larger paintings and this is no doubt a cartoon which were not signed.
His drawings sell for up to $83,000 and he is listed in Benezit as well as in many books from that period.
