Jules Rene Herve, France, 1887-1981, Known for: genre, city scenes, and landscape painting. 9.5"H by 14"W in original frame 14 3/4" by 19" Gallery Label and other label verso, Signed LR, J Herve Mathe, verso Le Bord Du Epnnal 1933, Excellent Condition. This size and quality painting usually sells for $1200.and up. An impressionist French artist whose subjects ranged from rural genre to Parisien city scenes and whose reputation was for shimmering colors, Jules Rene Herve was born in Langres in eastern France. He first studied art in evening classes in his hometown, knowing as a child he wanted to be an artist. Then he enrolled in the School of Decorative Arts in Paris, and in 1910, first exhibited a painting in the Salon of French Artists. In 1914, he received the Medaille d'Argent (silver medal) from the French Artists association, and from that time was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salons. However, his painting career was interrupted because of serving in the Army for the duration of World War I. He had earned a teaching certificate, and from 1911 to 1943, with the exception of his war service, was an art instructor for many students.As a painter, he preferred solitude, and was not focused on publicity or being a part of any 'group' of like-minded painters. His paintings are in collections in Pads, Langares, Saint-Etienne, Annecy and Tourcoing France; and in Chicago at the Art Institute, and the Dahesh Museum in New York City.

Emmanuel Gondouin, French 1883-1934, Wood Cutters in French Woods. oil on canvas, signed LR & signed & dated 1930 verso, 24" by 35.5" in older frame 27" by 39". Gondouin was known for: Figures, Still life, Nature morte painting, Figurative and Cubist subjects. Emmanuel Gondouin lived in poverty in the districts of Montmartre and Montparnasse in Paris. He befriended Modigliani and Zadkine. Provenance: Purchased from the artist by Rosenberg Gallery, Direct descent through family to present owner. His paintings sell for up to $50,000.

Fernand Leger, French,1881-1955. This stunning example of Fernand Leger's imagery at his early cubust period in the 1920's is pencil on paper. It is 21.5cm w by 25cm h in a beautiful frame 45cm w by 47.5cm h. It is signed lower left F. L. 20. Fernand Léger was born in 1881, the same year both Picasso and Braque were born, in Normandy; his father was a substantial cattle grazer. Fernand was trained as an architectural draughtsman and later worked as a professional retoucher of photographs. He was an abstract painter before the War, in which he had a brilliant record. He had visited the United States twice. In France, he lived in a villa next to some railroad tracks in a Paris suburb, and a farm in Normandy where he raised pigs and made cider.It is often said that Léger was the artist of the machine age, but he was not entirely a man of his time. He knew poverty as a child, was gassed in World War I, had to flee before the invading Nazis in World War II. But there is little of death and destruction in his work. Other men have painted with more passion, few with more exuberance.Léger returned to France at the end of 1945 after spending the war years traveling and lecturing in the United States. There had been three previous visits to America in the 1930s, all entrepreneurial adventures of only modest success. He had resumed his practice of making public appearances to explain his art to a sometimes curious, sometimes bewildered public. In addition, he enjoyed many celebrity encounters, like a holiday with Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, an evening at the theatre with James Joyce and friendships with Ezra Pound and Henry Miller. His paintings sell for up to 37 Million and his paintings are in many museums.

It is from a private collection of a french family that brought the painting from France where is was purchased in the late 19th C. this is the time that Claude Monet was actively painting in the village. Francoise Boucher Attr or School of : Cupids in Landscape: Pair 18th C French. This pair of oils on canvas is lovely in the quality of painting and the charming subject matter. Each panel is 28"w by 64"h. They had hinges on them as a standing screen but were later used as hanging panels. They are from a prominent french family who brought them to the USA.

Felix Francois Georges Philibert Ziem, French, 1821-1911. This oil on wood panel, signed lower left,is a high quality and exquisitely painted example of Ziem's Venice scenes. It is 8.5" h by 6.5 w in a simple frame with outer dimensions of 11" h by 8" w. This piece is from a private collection and housed in a simple frame.

Francois Gall, Hungarian/French, 1912-1987 "Le Petit Dejeuner" is a beautiful oil on canvas signed F. Gall (lower right) 20 x 17 1/2 inches, good condition, circa 1940-50. Jean Jacques Henner, French, 1829-1905. This dreamy beautiful painting is oil on canvas, signed lower left is 15 7/8" by 24 1/8" in a beautifl period frame (24 3/8" by 32 7/8"). It is in good condition and has been lined long ago. There is an old tag on the upper back with the name in French and a price of $27,500. He is listed in Benezit and his paintings sell for up to $75,000.

DUFRESNE, CHARLES,(1876-1938 French) "Terreur dans la Foret", framed watercolor and pencil, approximate image size 9" x 7", frame 16" x 15", signed lower right, purchased at Galerie Stiebel, Paris Jan.15th, 1955. CONDITION: Good with bright stable colors.

Gustave Courbet,(attributed) French, 1819-1877. La Recolte de Pommes de Terres, The Potato Gatherers is an impressive landscape with peasants harvesting potatoes in a rocky terrain. This large oil on canvas is 29"H by 36.5"W in the original 6" period frame. It has been lined and restored. Ir is signed though a ghost signature as a result of overcleaning in the 1990's. Provenance: Purchased by Jack Sartor, Dallas Art Dealer from a gallery in Pasadena, CA ca 1958. Sold to David R Russell, Dallas, Texas for his collection in 1960.(He submitted documentation to the Frick Museum, N.Y. see copies in 1960. It was signed at that time lower left.) Resold back to Jack Sartor after that and remained in the family. Bequethed to Scott Sartor, son. Bought by present owner in about 2006. Courbet is a famous and very well regarded artist whose work can be seen in most major museums such as the Metropolitain Museum, Musee D'Orsay, Paris, as well as at least 50 smaller museums. He is listed in Benezit and many other publication and his auctions records go up to $1.644 Million.

Francoise Charles Cachoud, French, 1866-1943. This pensive and beautifully painted French Country House Scene in the moonlight is another wonderful example of Cachoud's genius with light and shadow and contrast. It is oil on canvas 23" by 28" in a period 3" frame for dimensions of 29" by 34".
