Jef Van Leemputten, Belgian, 1865-1948. This wonderful rare scene of a Horseback Rider with His Dogs on the Beach at the Seashore is the most interesting painting I have ever seen by Leemputten who is know for paintings of animals, usually sheep. The painting is oil on wood panel, signed lower right. It is in good condition in the original early 20th C frame. It is 27 3/8" H by 38 6/8" W, framed 34 1/5" H by 45 18" W.

16th C Italian Crucifixion. This magnificent painting is oil on canvas with old relining. It is apparently unsigned and most likely an altarpiece painting. The painting is 41.5 W by 41.5" H. Provenance: Private Midwestern Collection, Private NY Collection, Private Prominent Old Master collection. Verified by Robert Simon, NY, NY as 16th C Italian Venetian. This painting has been verified as 16h-17h C Italian Venetian alterpiece by Expert Robert Simon NY, NY and is from a prominent Old Master collection. The painting is also a very rare example of a chronicle of the crusades. In the background one can see various cities of the crusades from left to right and on the right front side are the soldiers on their horses returning to their countries.

Harry Humphrey Moore,American,New York, Calif, Paris. 1844-1926). It is oil on canvas, signed (LR) H H Moore 1873 Rome, size - 43"H x 30"W. Born deaf in New York City, Harry Moore was a student of Thomas Eakins when attending a school for the deaf in Philadelphia. Eakins recommended he study at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris where he became a student of Jean Leon Gerome. Completing his studies in 1869, Moore traveled in Spain with Eakins, and he was so impressed by the landscape that he stayed several years. In 1872, he married and moved to Morocco and also went to Japan, having been encouraged by the artist Robert Blum. His reputation was established by his interest in Oriental subject matter--- he along with William Heine, Edward Kern, and Winckworth Gay,was one of the first American artists to visit Japan. There he created about sixty paintings of Oriental subject matter including temples, gardens, and Geisha girls. Throughout his life, he was a world traveler, living a lot in Paris, but he spent much time in San Francisco between 1864 and 1907. His paintings sell for up to $100,000. The large important painting such as this are very rare.

John Ruskin, British, 1819-1900, Rysdale in Coniston, England. John Ruskin was the hero of Coniston where his works are housed in The Ruskin Museum. He was an artist, radical and seer. He is known for his works on paper using pencil and watercolor, many of which are from his extensive European travels. This beautiful pencil and watercolor piece is a very rare drawing of the Rysdale House from the Wood where he lived in England. It is 29.5 cm (11.5")W by 21 cm (8.25")H in pencil with sepia and sienna ink. It is in good condition and signed lower right J. Ruskin. His watercolors sell for up to $464,491 at auction.

Narcisse Virgile de la Pena Diaz, French, 1807-1875. This is a lovely portrait of a lovely young maiden and her little dog by her sidein a landscape. This oil on canvas is housed in the original beautiful 19th C frame. It is 21.5"W by 32.5"H (framed - 32.5" by 43.5") It is signed lower left Rome 1960. Born in Bordeaux, France, he was known for his landscapes in the Barbizon Style. He started studying art at an early age and was a student of David. He showed for the first time at the Famous Salon De Paris in 1831 and subsequently every year from 1834-1859. Diaz was a very independent artist who observed the movement of the shadows and light in the small openings in wooded landscapes. He is a painter of the "instant" and is considered a preimpressionist. His paintings are in at least 30 museums: including the Louvre, as well as museums in London, Moscow, Helsinki, Amsterdam, Many cities in France. He has a very extensive auction record as well as a very long listing in Benezit. His painting sell for up to $160,000.

Italian School, 17th C. This lovely early oil on canvas of an Italian Woman up upbraided hair is 24"H by 20"W. It is unsigned and in good condition for it's age with small older repairs that are not very noticeable and small age appropriate craquelure with no lifting of paint. The frame is 19th C and framed dimensions: 31"H by 27"W.

Ottavio Padovanino, Italian, 1582-1634. This stunning drawing is red chaulk and pencil on paper mounted on paper. It is 15"H by 10.6"W with the name Padovanino handwritten in pencil on the paper below the drawing. Verso is written Alessandro Varotari, Verona, 1588-1648, "Le Padovau...." The condition is good with minor foxing and a darkened edge due to framing. It was in a private collection in Chicago.

Edgar Lewis Bloomster, Paxton, IL, April 6, 1895 to May 31, 1968 in San Francisco. This lovely seascape is oil on canvas signed lower left, 23 1/2" H by 29 1/2" W in a lovely period frame. Bloomster studied at the AIC and in Paris. An avid sailor, he participated in many of the annual Chicago-Mackinac races on Lake Michigan. His love of sailing craft and the ocean were to become the dominant theme of his artworks. He arrived in San Francisco about 1939 and established a studio-home at 2726 Greenwich Street where he taught painting.
