He also painted at Monhegan Island, Maine, where a treacherous ledge on the southern side of the island is named "Norton's Ledge" for him. He was a member of the Boston Art Club with whom he exhibited from 1873 to 1909. Frank Duveneck, N.A, Cincinnati & Munich, 1848-1919. This oil on canvas of a bearded man is 28"h by 16"w in a period 4" frame. He was a highly influential artist & teacher of the late 19th century. He studied at the Munich Royal Academy from 1870-73, where he lived and worked the majority of his life. Except for returning to Cincinnati in 1874, he traveled between Munich, Venice and Florence until 1888. Duveneck taught many students in Florence as well in Boston until he joined the staff of Cincinnati Art Academy, where in 1905, he became Dean. Duveneck was a realist painter working in a robust Munich style who also showed some attributes of the Ashcan School. The light and color of Italy influenced Duveneck and his work became brighter and smoother in brushwork. He became a well-trained academic painter whose work ranged from single figures in interiors to plein air canvases of figures in landscape and often included the depiction of low-life persons. His styles included Realism, Social Realism, and Impressionism, and his work was ever influenced by the dark tones and vigorous brush-strokes of the Munich style, which he learned at the Munich Academy in the 1870s. Art historian Matthew Baigell described Duveneck's mature style as having "loose highlights brushed over ruggedly blocked-out forms emerging from a richly suggestive chiaroscuro." Duveneck bequeathed his collection to the Cincinnati Art Museum when he died in 1919. His work is in many museums and sells for up to $385,000.

Paul Cornoyer, 1864-1923,born in St Louis, MO, lived & worked in NYC & Gloucester, MA. This painting is in Gloucester, MA where he lived & worked. It is a lovely quiet masterpiece showing his exquisite use of light & shadow combined with perfect placement of lovely brushstrokes of color. It is oil on board, signed lower left, with the start of a second painting on the reverse side. It is 10 1/8"H by 13 1/4" W in good condition in the original early 20th Century frame (21" H by 24" W). He studied at the St Louis School of Fine Arts in 1881. His first works were in a Barbizon mode, and his first exhibit was in 1887. In 1889, he went to Paris for further training, studying at the Academie Julien, and returned to St. Louis in 1894. By the early 1890s, his work was more lyrical and Tonal, with subjects such as cityscapes and landscapes. In 1899, Cornoyer traveled to New York City, upon the encouragement of William Merritt Chase, who had acquired some of his work (probably the Parisian scene shown at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts annual in 1896-97). In New York, Cornoyer became a specialist in Tonal urban scenes, especially after rain with its blurred effects, his masterwork being The Plaza after Rain, purchased in 1910 by the new art museum of St. Louis. He was able to capture the wet, mirrored pavements with precision, streets with horse drawn carriages, trees, aligned buildings and streets. In addition, Cornoyer taught at the Mechanics Institute in New York, and later was an instructor in Massachusetts, moving there in 1917. He painted and exhibited his works up until his death in 1923.
