Beautiful Meji Period c.1900 negoro lacquer wood stand. Negoro lacquer was a technique developed by the zen buddhist monks at Negoro-ji temple south of Osaka in Edo Period to support their temple. Hemp gauze is applied to the wood stand then a black lacquer layer and over it, red lacquer. A horse bento box, this pair of buckets has iron metal work on the rims and a crest in gold lacquer and the inscription 'no no mura' in red lacquer on the back meaning country village.
