Beautifully elegant hand carved Meiji Period c.1900 wood zen temple candlestands. This pair would have been on the altar of a buddhist temple. Copper rings and metalwork. The base is carved in the shape of a chrysanthemum. The textured ridged poles are equally impressive. Many layers of maroon lacquer create a wonderful patina. Some wax still on base from candles. Beautiful Meji Period c.1900 negoro lacquer wood stand. Negoro lacquer was a technique developed by the zen buddhist monks at Negoro-ji temple south of Osaka in Edo Period to support their temple. Hemp gauze is applied to the wood stand then a black lacquer layer and over it, red lacquer. A horse bento box, this pair of buckets has iron metal work on the rims and a crest in gold lacquer and the inscription 'no no mura' in red lacquer on the back meaning country village.
