This c.1760 painting of a dragon on silk was created by Ryosetsu, who also went by the name Jinensai. A painter in the Kano school tradition, Jinensai was a Shinto priest and pupil of the priest Ryogetsu. Jinensai was a leading sumi-e artist of the time and followed the styles of Sesshu and Mu-ch'i. This bold wagumi style Japanese bamboo flower basket epitomizes the free-wheeling styles prevelent at the turn of the century as compared to the rather stoic, finely woven Chinese influenced styles in the late 1800's. Antique Edo Period c.1860 Buddhist temple lantern still in mint condition, which itself is rare. Made of a bronze-copper alloy, the leaves on the top and the legs on the bottom are in perfect condition. The body of the lantern is hexogonal with three doors having circles, two panels with flowers and one panel has the kanji characters for the donor and his village. c.1860. (24" 17") (61cm x 43cm).
